A Dénouement

Now that the weeks and weeks of training are finally over, I'd like to leave a few (okay, many) words here before I dig myself into the projects and reports that I now have no excuse not to neglect.

This is my last (barring some major screwup this semester, which I'd really like to avoid) year debating alongside you guys, so now's probably a good time to give credit where it's due =)

First of all, a big thank you to everyone that has been a part of my debate experience. To the guys that suckered me into staying when I was but a wee year 1 noob, to those who dragged me back and prematurely terminated my self-imposed moratorium in year 3, and to all those in between who've kept me going. Many of you are the same people- the people who've made CADC what it has been to me- the Awesomest Club Ever.

I guess I somehow knew that despite leaving after AUDCs, I'd eventually return. CADC's been somewhat of my Hotel California- you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. And I'm all the better for that. Thank you for letting me be a part of this club. For shaping me into a better (I hope) debater over the past few years, and for understanding- and believing in me- during the many I faltered.

This might or might not be my last year in debates (it now all depends on whether USyd accepts hangers-on who only have one year with them into their club), but for all it's worth, debate or no, I'll miss CADC tremendously.

It's been a rollercoaster of a debate career, and I've been on both sides of the coin, so much so that I've collected every single certificate/plaque that exists in this tournament (except, thankfully, for cert of participation). Admittedly it would have been nice to repeat last year's performance, but sometimes life just doesn't work out the way we want it to.

I've learnt that it isn't the trophies, the awards, or the accolades that make up the club, that keep people in the club. I'm sure as heck didn't know we had a 9-year winning streak in our history, and I'm equally sure that it isn't the fact that we win things that kept me going. Prizes are nice, but put in perspective, they're but only affirmations of performance.

To Jan, the ever-supportive SAO- your enthusiasm and willingness to go the extra mile has been extremely appreciated. Our club totally owns all other debate societies in poly and uni.

To the coaches, thank you for your patience throughout this past three years. For, of course, imparting your years of debate wisdom, but more importantly, for believing in me and giving someone who started off struggling to make a speech which lasted longer than 3minutes a chance. For looking past- and helping me through- my fear and self-doubt, for being humorous warm and extremely approachable, and giving the club these same characteristics others can only try to emulate. For going beyond the call of duty, and inspiring us to better ourselves on a daily basis.

To the team and alumni, it has been an honour to fight alongside all of you, you who are sometime teammates, sometime worthy adversaries, but always, friends. So as you guys start your prep for next year, as you invariably will, keep in mind that like many other things in life, it isn't the destination, but the journey, that really counts. Keep your head in the clouds and your feet on the ground and always remember where you came from so that one day when you graduate from the club you can write a whole wall of text that in all probability no one will bother to read =).

Godspeed toward Victory, guys.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

This is an extremely important notice for everyone.

This coming Monday the 29th of September, there will be a COMPLUSORY training session with regards to team selection for EVERYONE.

This session will deal with all the issues you will have to face with regards to the Inter-Poly debate selection trials.

The selection trials will be held on Wednesday, 1st October. Timing will be confirmed on monday.

EVERYONE has to make it for these sessions if you want to compete in the Inter-Poly Debating Championships.

Attendance Issues

It is rather shameful that I've to write this post at this time. CADC has been having persistent problems with attendance this year and it has still not improved. I really should not be highlighting this now when we are so close to Interpoly 2008. With only one month left to the competition, everyone should be coming for training regularly, and yet I see no end to the excuses I've been enduring since last semester as to why people can't show up for training. And of course there are the times when there are no excuses, people just simply decide they don't feel like showing up.

What's more rude is when I sms people to confirm if they are coming for training and I do not get replies. A sense of basic communication tells you that when a person says "There is training today at such-and-such time, you need to communicate by replying whether you are coming or not." Yet often I do not get replies. After which I have to sms a second time specifically asking for a reply, and even then I have found some people still not replying. It is rather unfair that I have to spend twice the time to write the same thing twice when the information I'm asking from you all can simply be gathered if you reply to the first notice.

As it is now, we have very little time till competition. I'll not be hounding you much anymore. You have seen the training schedule Pirakash has posted. Monday Wednesday and Friday are compulsory for seniors. Tuesday and Thursday are compulsory for juniors. Juniors may join us on Friday if they are truly enthusiastic about debates and wants CADC to win this year.

I'm going to now leave this to your judgement. Everyone here is more or less an adult and I should not be chasing after you anymore. If you come for training, it is only to help yourself and to help the coaches decide to put you in the Interpoly teams. If you don't, the coaches can't figure out whether you are ready to debate, and I assure you, you will be dropped out. If you want the time you have spent in CADC to have true meaning, the choice is obvious.

I'll end this post on this note - At times, when we are involved in certain things - be that CCAs, exams, events - we are required to make sacrifices. We often have to give up what we enjoy doing so as to do what we should be doing. That time is now. Now we should be training very very hard. It will feel intense at times. It will seem unbearable. But know that at the end of it all, you still have your friends and coaches in CADC together with whom you'll go through this. And when you have given your best shot regardless of the obstacles and frustrations, the reward will be worth it. I'm aware you have a social life, you have part time jobs and what not. But knowing all that, I still ask for some sacrifice for this month.

First training date is Tuesday 2nd Sept. It's going to be at 7.ooPM in E307. Subsequent training dates will be decided on that day so EVERYONE needs to show up.

Topic for debate on Tuesday will be Carbon Trading. Go READ UP before you come for training. Make use of Wikipedia, Google, Debatabase and what not to enlighten yourself. Hope to see everyone on Tuesday.

first things first - congratulations to all who took part in the inter-school debates 2008 and achieving all that you have achieved. everyone did a great job. thank you for helping CADC realise the event.

next, debates training shall resume from next week (this is the part where some of you will groan - so go ahead). training dates are Aug 5, 6 and 7 for next week. that would be tue, wed and thu. TRY TO COME FOR AT LEAST TWO OF THOSE THREE DATES.

there will also be training the following week on Aug 12, 13 and 14. Once again, try to make it for at least two of the three dates provided. those who come for all three dates, i will give you a free cookie.

TRAINING WILL TAKE PLACE IN E307 AT 5PM FOR ALL 6 DAYS.

after that, there will no more training in the month of august as i believe we all have exams. study comes first (only during the exam month, not at any other times) so no debates training during that period.

Training Time Update

Due to inevitable powerplay and exertion of authority in the SA Office, I'm unable to book E307 at 5pm and instead have been told to make do with 6pm.

A few things to let everyone know -

1. Training time and day for freshies will be 4pm - 7pm on Wednesday till further notice. Venue is not fixed; it will be notified by SMS as it may change every week. Coaches conducting the session will be William and/or Jose.

Training time and day for seniors will be 7.30pm - 10pm on Wednesday. Joey will be taking this session. While juniors can leave at 7pm, they are more than welcome if they have no life and wants to stay over to watch the seniors train till 10pm.

For those freshmen (and women) who cannot make it to the juniors training, you are also welcome to join the seniors.

2. NYP is sending 1 debate team this May to the Asian Universities Debating Championship (AUDC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The team will have 3 debates and 1 adjudicator (judge). So far we already have 2 debaters (Me and Samuel) and we need another debater and a judge. What the school allows us to do is to go pick 2 lucky freshies to tag along with us to AUDC.

This overseas competition will be from 14th May - 22nd May, so those who are interested in joining us, bear in mind that you'll be missing a lot of lessons and when you come back you'll have major catching up to do. Also the trip does not come free (you wish right?) - the school bears 65% of the cost, while the participants bear the remaining 35%. Now that 35% calculates to exactly $196.50, payable by May 2nd to NYP by NETS, Edusave or Cheque. The good part is your transport, lodging, airfare and food all are covered in that money.

Now I am sure what I have said above probably doesnt make complete sense to a lot of the new people. So dont worry, come next training - you get to bombard me with all your questions and get more details from me.

Sha's Belated Thank You Speech

I would like to thank the people below for bringing back the glory and the trophy back to NYP! They are:

JOEY
My first coach. Thank you for guiding me for nearly two years. Eventhough I'm a slow learner, you never gave up on me and continue imparting the skills needed. You trained me from the 2nd speaker to the 1st speaker and to the whip speaker. And sometimes when I have difficulty in understanding some terminology, without complaints, you would explain it to me over and over again. Really appreciate it all that you have done. Thank you for not only coaching me but also the rest and bringing NYP CADC to where it is today.

JOSE
Thank you for being our '2nd' coach. For coaching and training us with or without Joey. Thank you for making trainings fun with all your funny but relevant examples to make us understand the various concepts. And thank you, for writing down on the board or keeping note of the number of 'actually' that I said in a speech, so that I can cut down on it. Though its hard to do so, but I did manage to cut down on it. So, thank you.

Thank you for being our '3rd' coach. Telling us in more indept about some of the laws and asking lots of POIs. Thank you for commenting and giving me advice on my speech especially the one which is on the day before the Inter-Poly. Thank you for counting with Faith and Jose, the number of 'actually' too. Thank you for just being there during some of our training sessions. Your presence are really much appreciated. Thank you for noticing that I say a lot of 'actually' in my speech and counting with Jose and William, the number of times. Because it really helps me to cut down. Without your help, I think I would still be saying about 40 plus 'actually' in a 7 min speech. Thank you so much.

The best speaker and the team leader of the CHAMPION TEAM (NYP B). I always knew deep inside that you are a great debater. Firstly, I would like to thank you for leading NYP CADC as the president eventhough you always have a very hectic schedule. Secondly, thank you for bringing back glory and the trophy back to NYP, together with your team. Thirdly, thank you for putting up with me. I know I can be very irritating at times and get on your nerves. Last but not least, "thank you" for coming up with the idea 'SHA is short for SHAFT'. I think I must come up with something for you too. Haha. Anyway, I guess now you are having your exams, all the best alrite... Do not stress yourself too much. Dont want another lapse of the room rocking. =)

The guy who never fails to irritate me. Always have something up his sleeves. It's either pulling my ear or purposely standing beside me to make me seem so short. Whatever it is, thank you for making me laugh during trainings with your usual antics and for always giving me that sunshine smile when I'm stoning or having that serious look on my face. Thank you too for twisting my words and making it seem that I think I am indispensable and that HUMANLINK cannot go on without me, when it is totally not the case. But never mind.. I forgive you. Haha. Thank you too.. For hackling me like mad.. So that I can control the crowd. And thank you for making me nearly half deaf by blasting the stereo in Harrold's car. To whom it may concern,

I would like to begin my post with a belated congratulations to NYP team B, Sharon, Pirakash and Harrold for winning the Inter-Polytechnic Debating Championship. The trophy is finally back where it belongs and where it will always belong. I would like to thank Sharon for constantly cabbing home with me after all the nights of intensive training in school. On hindsight, I remember you used to frown at the thought of having to pay a large amount for the cab. Second, Pirakash for being such a great game buddy, ( the Spirit breaker who never buys tango, and eats mine instead ), and Harrold for all the fun-filled adventures in the Volvo S60. Once again, congratulations for the win, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavours together as a team.

Next, I would like to extend my thanks to all the coaches and seniors who put in the effort to coach us, support us, or even to drive us home during this period of time. Without all of you, I do not know where I would get my source of inspiration and motivation from. I would like to thank Joey, beyond GOdlike, Pang, who has imparted his wisdom and his plethora of arguments to mould us into the individuals that we are today. Jose Kasijo, resident french man, with his excellent policies and perspectives, also responsible for grooming us into what we have today. William Riyadi, outstanding warbook noob, and future top lawyer, with his stunning POIs and legal principles, also responsible for what we are today. And also, many thanks to Nizar, Halim, and every single person who came down to support us. Without all of you, there will be no us.

Not forgetting our beloved SAO, Ms Janette Ang, the one who treats us as her own, making sure we get enough vitamins in our body, showering us with words of encouragement and care, and the many meals that she has treated us to, Thank you for everything you have done for us.

Moving on, I would like to thank my team mates of NYP A, Sakib and Sha. Sakib, the hairy chest bangladeshi, one of the most friendly guys I have ever known in school. It is really easy to work with him and I would like to thank him for saving my ass many times during debates when I screw something up. Sha, the "actually" girl, thank you for whatever you have done for me, (and the gelare voucher) , and for the time we have spent together, and the friendship that we have forged. Without you guys, I wouldnt be what I am today.

Finally, I would like to thank Irwan, Celestina, Ali, Mike AKA and Terrence Toy liushuai for everything. Andik Irwan, for making me a 1st runner up during Inter schools( =x just kidding ), more so, for being such a good friend, for being so supportive and encouraging. We may have had our conflicts, but at the end of the day, you are still my bro ;). Celestina, for all your unique arguments which always casts me in constant bemusement. Thanks to you, my intelligence increased two fold :p, I'll never forget how a building may collapse if there are 20 rapists on one storey. Ali, for the constant questioning of debate tournament and training schedules, but never actually taking part in any. I would like to thank him for all his words of encouragement and support, and for actually coming down to support us. And also, I want to thank him for the excellent and brilliant first speech that he gave during inter schools. You were "stunning"! =) Last but not least, Mike, the intellect who has a vast amount of general knowledge, and for being such a good and loyal friend. One of the best sparring mates, and a great guy. Finally, I would like to thank Terrence Toy for everything. For being such a passionate guy towards debates, NYP CADC, a good friend, and one who stands by his principles. I thank God, for meeting such a great friend like you.

I just got back to stalking the blogs today, and my! So many posts in such a short time! My turn now.

Many thanks follows, to everyone that in some way or other has helped and influenced me or the team to help us get to where we are today, basically the inter-poly champions. This would not have been possible without you guys, the daily training sessions where we trained to near (mental) exhaustion, and the competitions that we went for together. Simply, i had a ball of a time, and i can't wait to do it again.

Joey: I would really like to thank you, for everything that you have done for us. We could have gone nowhere without your coaching and guidance, especially argumentation. Also thank you for being a really patient coach, i don't think i 've ever seen you get angry before, and that really helped because it made training so much more easier. Hope you will continue to coach us, and continue to induct more members into the cult of "Pangism". =)

Jose: My first coach, the resident Frenchman. Thanks for teaching me the basics of debating and public speaking(although it might not have seemed like i learnt anything when you adjudicated me at inter-schools). Also thanks for coming down all the way from SIM on fridays to coach us. We couldn't have done this without out you as well.

William: I concur with sakib, warbook noob! Thanks for guiding me through my first debate at the NTU Pro-Ams and exposing me to BP debating as well. Also thanks for your help with legal principles and POI-ing. Thanks for taking your time to come down for our training sessions and helping us. We really appreciate it

Sherry: We couldn't have done this without you. Supreme Leader, Ayatollah, Oracle and most importantly team captain. Thanks for setting up fantastic cases and pulling the both of us through the debate with the ever so important POIs. You really deserve your best speaker awards, and you deserve another award for being able to come for all training sessions even though you had to maintain your 4.0 average. I also would like to apologize for agitating you, and i would also like to apologize in advance for the agitation that i am going to give you in the following competitions :D. Continue keeping that case file, for we are going to need it for winning the inter-polys next year. We plan on bringing you out for wine-tasting after your ICAs are over.

Harrold: Thanks for coming in the team at such short notice and committing to training for the next 2 weeks. I would like to thank you for being such a supportive team member and continually making me laugh for the past 2 weeks. Every time we go out in your car it becomes an "adventure", and you were one of the main reasons for me having so much fun in the past two weeks. I hope you will stay on in CADC and go with us for future competitions. (P/S: The taxi's carplate number is: SHC7538)

Sakib: Thanks for coming for training every day, and helping me with the arguments as well. I'm sure you'll win the inter-polys next year, and you are our next best speaker after sherry. Thanks for being in the club room every time i needed to use it, and chilling with me before training. Keep training mate, you have the potential to be the best, and continue making people cry and setting up great cases involving Kurdish militia. =)

Samuel: No.1 game buddy, and also in CADC, thanks for dragging me along to CADC for the first time. Was great fun having you around, and thanks for coming on our little adventures with harrold and i. You are obviously CADC's next big thing since you are only year 1. Keep improving and lets go for competitions and keep tearing new holes for people.

Sha: THANK YOU for abandoning human link, the most important organization in NYP to come for training. I don't know how they managed without you, but they did. We can all now breathe easy. Sorry for heckling you intensely during training, you improved a great deal and you are a great 3rd speaker. Keep it up!

Terry: Thanks for all the stories, and coming down for training even though you had graduated. Your passion for this club is obvious, and we were spured on by you as well. Enjoy NS!

Irwan: Thanks for coming down to train with us, thanks for supporting us as a 3rd speaker. Together with samuel, you guys being only first years have so much of time to win everything that you could possibly win in the poly circuit. Please come back for training as you have alot left to accomplish

Jan: A big thank you to you as well. You made our lives so much easier by providing taxi's for training, helping us get the required equipment and funds and treating us to those great dinners which i have really not thanked you properly for. Thanks for being so nice and helping us get through this period well. Those lozenges helped btw. =)

Irwan's Speech

Hello, my dear teammates. I congratulate all of you on winning the Inter-Poly debate competition. Sharon once said: "The glory of winning the inter-poly would pale in comparison to the bonds that must be forged en route." I sincerely believe on that principle ever since I started to join CADC. Thanks to Sharon, Sha and Nazir for asking me to join debate for the very first time.

Looking back, when I first started entering the debating arena, I only knew Samuel, Pirakash and Harrold as my rivals in Inter-school finals. I only knew Sakib as one of the toughest opponent I faced in the preliminary rounds. I remembered debate camp where we play soccer together, where we brought our laptops to play DOTA with each other, where we bathe in the ladies toilet, and lastly, where we tell ghost stories before sleeping beside each other. As days goes by, during training sessions, we all are in the same room till late almost every weekdays. Most of the times, we irritate each other, we made jokes at each other and we laugh at one another. We all have gone through much together. I will always remember those times. Thank you all for the great experience.

When I was made a reserve a day before inter-poly, it is not a hidden fact that I’m quite saddened by the news. However, I understand that I am still not good enough. Sharon and Jose' would know me best. This is because when I attended my first ever debate training a few days before Inter-School debate competition, I made a 3min speech! Thus, I would like to sincerely thank the coaches (Joey, Jose & William) for making me the debater I am today. Perhaps being just a 1st year, I hope I still got room to improve myself further. I also like to thank all of you (including Terrence, Mike, Edwin & Celestina) for all the sparring session we had during trainings. I really appreciate it.

Since the Inter-poly has ended, I will be taking a long break from CADC for quite some time. I have made my mind. I've decided to prioritize on my studies, my classmates and my soccer for the time being. However, as promised, I will come back to CADC for sure. I will also be participating in the Inter-school debate competition once again. Take note that I'm determined to fight for my place, to be good enough to represent NYP one day(so you all better dont slack off when I'm away). Last but not least, by sheer chance that we may cross path in school in the near future, I hope we all can meet up again- now, as FRIENDS.

To the triad of coaches- Joey, Jose and William- thank you for your time and energy and dedication, because none of us would have gotten to where we were if not for your efforts which went above and beyond the call of duty. On behalf of NYP(A) and NYP (B), thank you for your commitment and support before and during the competition. Thank you for sitting in the most prominent seats ever throughout our most critical rounds, and especially during the finals, because your nods of affirmation really meant so much to us when we were taking the floor. Thank you for believing in us, and for teaching us to aim higher than I even dared to dream about. Thank you for showing us that it could somehow all work out, in spite of all the odds, if we just tried hard enough. Thank you for your faith where I had none, and your encouragement. And although I know I still have a long, long way to improve, thank you for making me the debater I am today.

To Halim and Nizar- This one is yours as much as it is mine. Thank you for yanking me into interschools together with you and kickstarting the crazy-assed ride that has been my short debating career. Thank you for somehow believing in me when I had no idea how impromptu debate even worked, and constantly dragging me along to improve. We were one heck of a team, weren't we. And so, to SHS(A) and NYP(A) 2006, thank you for showing me the ropes and for all your support, both last year and this year. Thank you for coming down this year to support us, and for sharing in the joy that is the completion of the job we set out to do last year (for now).

To my teammates- Pira and Harrold and Irwan. Thank you for training alongside with me, and bearing all the shut-up-and-prep's. Thank you for your faith in me, even throughout my off-colour days. And thank you for keeping me grounded. And to Pira (and I'll continue calling you Pira until you stop your Sherry business you toot) and Harrold, thank you for fighting together with me throughout the competition. You've improved so much along the way, and I'm really proud of you. Also, on an auxiliary note, thank you for making me appreciate my life so much more, because I have never felt so much closer to the light at the end of the tunnel than in Harrold's Volvo.

To NYP(B)- Sakib, Sam, Sha, Mike- we couldn't have won without you guys to spar against. Thank you for training against us and helping us to tighten our case (you get what I mean la.. too bad we met in the semi's and not the finals though). Thank you for helping us to shape up and keeping us sharply on our toes at all times. Hopefully we'll get to do our NYP-NYP finals next year!

To all our supporters (and this also includes every one of you mentioned above)- Thank you for taking the time off to cheer us on, and for being such a wonderful crowd. Thank you for all your prayers and the noise and table-banging and affirmation and encouragement in all forms throughout the competition- I hope we made it worth your while =) To Janette- thanks for the food and sweets and care and support throughout! And since I seem to have the most supportive family ever, thanks for coming down; I might not have said it upfront, but I really appreciate it.

And to God (because winning 6 out of 7 coin tosses, including the 3 most critical coin flips, is too much to attribute to pure chance, and because I don't really believe all the coaches have psychic powers)- Thank You.

And so, if there's anything we've learnt in this competition, it is that fair play and hard work and divine intervention sometimes can come together for some very potent results.

(Also, we've also learnt that smoking although not harmful, is a good enough indicator to deprioritize one for organ transplants. And that women should be forced to serve NS but be free to choose to prostitute themselves. And that capital punishment and amnesty for illegal immigrants can't really be linked together in a sentence.=)

A Tribute To All Those Who Cared

Sharon was the one who had written the inspiring post before the Interpolytechnic Competition 2007. I realise I have never really thanked nor complimented her for that brilliant speech which many people in CADC did after she wrote it. Belated as this may be, but thank you Sharon, that was a great speech. And just as she was the one who posted something for CADC before the competition, today I intend to post something now that the competition has ended.

This post is a Thank You letter. These are all those words of gratitude I have not spoken out loud to all those people in CADC who made our dream of winning the cup a reality. This is for those without whom today I could not be so proud.

My first thanks goes out to Joey Pang, coach of CADC (yes, all those people who think that NYP doesn't have a coach, well, actually we do). Joey, thank you for the effort that you have put in for us, regardless of your exams and your health. Thank you for bringing us to where we are today, the proud keepers of the championship trophy. Thank you for moulding us to what we are today, and I do not only mean moulding us as debate teams, but as individuals, for helping us grow in the various facets we were good in (and not good in). Thank you for all those brilliant multi-purpose arguments that seemed to fit pretty much in all debates, and while at training we would always joke about "Imposition vs. Organic Change" and "Driving things underground", I can safely say that to a great extent we have learnt the value and power of argumentations that you have tried to impart on us.

My second thanks to Jose Kasijo, our resident Frenchman and yet another coach of NYP CADC. Thank you for all those days when you picked us up when Joey could not make it to training. And thank you for all those days you were still there even when Joey did make it to training. Thank you for complimenting what Joey taught us with your own knowledge and style of argumentations and policy-making. If it was not for you making a coordinated effort along with Joey to build us, I do not know if we could have made it as far as we did in this competition.

My next thanks to William Riyadi, Warbook noob and third coach of NYP (haha, yes, all those people who think that NYP doesn't have a coach,in fact we have three). Thank you for helping us along with Joey and Jose. Thank you for your brilliant POIs that would more often than not put us in 15-seconds stun and make us wonder how to retort back. Thank you for imparting various legal knowledge (such as the one about Freedom of Movement for EU Citizens) that showed us yet more aspects of case-setups in debate. Thank you for all your support.

This thanks goes to NYP B team of Sharon, Pirakash and Harrold for winning the trophy for us, for making us so proud today. I thank you also for providing the competition for me during debate trainings to build myself and NYP A team. You people were always my source of inspiration. I would always tell myself - "I have to be better than Sharon" or "I have to preempt Praks arguments" or "I have to find holes in Harrold's rebuttals". Thank you for all the challenges you three put me through during trainings.

My next thanks to my team itself. Thank you Sam, thank you Sha. Thank you for being there with me through the trainings, thank you for keeping me on the right track during prep, thank you for making me want to give my level best so that I don't screw things up for you two - most importantly, thank you for making the journey with me through the competition. We may have not made it past semis, but I am proud to have achieved what we did together.

Next thanks to Mike and Irwan. I'm indebted to you for training with us, for providing us the platform to help us grow, and eventually for all your support during competition. Speaking of support, I would also like to thank Ali, Nizar, Halim and Sha's friends who came down to cheer us on. Your every smile, every approving nod, every thumbs up was invaluable.

And now not forgetting Miss Janette Ang, our SAO. Thanks to Ms Jan for supporting us through everything starting from booking training rooms for us to coming down all the way to SP to watch us. Thank you for all the food that you ordered for us, and thank you for all the food you treated us to later during dinners. Thank you for the moral support on the days we felt the pressure was too much and the burdens too heavy. In one sentence, I would just say - Thank you for being our great SAO!

Firstly, thank you all for your active participation in CADC. It's been a heck of a year for me, and I really wouldn't have made it this far without all your help and support- Sha and Edwin, for assisting me through the earlier part of the year, and all the juniors for relieving some of the administrative burden in recent months.

The inter-polys are coming up, and as you can tell from Prak's helpful posting of our training times below, the next few weeks are going to be an extremely trying period.

There may be days where we will be tired- where we feel like we cannot carry on juggling the multiple personae of student, and debater, and friend. There may be days where, despite the work invested, progress seems to have stalled and the mental blocks, impossible to climb. And there may be days where we feel like just giving up.

These days will pass. The Inter-polys, regardless of outcome, will pass.

What will make the passing easier, however, is our ability to unite as a team and fight as a cohesive whole.

The glory of winning or the bitterness of what could have been- they pale in comparison to the bonds that must be forged en route.

Debate is never about the individual. It might be lonely and vulnerable on the floor, but remember that your team is there to back you up, as you are there to back your team mates up.

The strongest speaker is only as good as his weakest team mate, because this is but a game with 3 players- each with a different role, and all equally as important.

We might be different people, from various backgrounds, and we might all be heading toward different goals in life. But while we are united as a debate team, we have a common goal, and we are each obliged to work toward it.

And so, when we get down to it, none of these differences matter, except to contribute our own unique perspectives and areas of expertise to build a credible case.

Ladies and gentlemen, the next 22 days are not going to be easy. Rest if you tire- we are all human, and life is more than winning debates- but just as importantly, don't ever give up.

As we begin our final lap on this road, remember that this is not so much of an individual event but a team relay. And perhaps now is a good time to lay aside our differences and work in unison to reach the finish.

We can do this- we really can- but only if we're all in it together.

Urgent:Sparring Session with NP Cancelled

Dear fellow members,

It is with the greatest regret that i inform you that Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Debating Society has cancelled the much anticipated sparring session that was supposed to be held on the 6th of October. I know that many of you guys have been looking forward to this day but apparently members of the NP Debating Society realised that they had a "very important function" that "everyone from their club had to attend" and that they only knew of this function today. Leaves much to desired from NP's planning.

I realise that the food has already been catered for, and thus in an effort to ensure that all the MONEY that we have used FROM OUR CLUB FUND does not go to waste, we invite our fellow members to join us for sparring within ourselves on the 6th of October as well. This training will go a long way to helping us take down our opponents in the upcoming inter-poly debates. We will also have the SMU Debating Team coming down (tentative) to train with us.

NP has offered us an alternative date at their campus on November the 3rd, but we have graciously rejected them as at that time we will be well into intensive training for inter-polys and we will be too busying training to be able to come up with the time to go to Ngee Ann.

We graciously thank Ngee Ann for considering to spar with us, and we hope that we may have the opportunity to spar again, perhaps after the inter-polys or when we are not too busy. Be the gracious host that NYP is, we will still provide food, paid for by US.

Training Time Changes

Joey's having his term break on Monday-8th October, and he's rather free so he can start training earlier, so we've decided on a tentative time of 2p.m

Pls inform us if you are able to make it. Those on attachment(i.e. Irwan) still can come at 6p.m because we'll still be training =)

Consider this the start of intensive training for inter-polys. Currently only me(Pirakash), Samuel and Sakib are confirmed. We would like the rest to confirm ASAP.

Friendly Match

Hey guys, I have arranged friendly matches with Ngee Ann Poly on the 6^th of October, Saturday. There will be three (3) rounds of debate. And dinner should be provided. The times of the debate would tentatively be, 1pm to 3.30pm, 4pm to 5.30 pm, 6.30 to 8pm. Dinner should (not confirmed since it is a Saturday) be at 530 to 630pm.

Since there are three rounds, debaters are highly encouraged to come so that they can spar and get back into our familiar style of debate which is the Asians style.

Let me or Sakib know whether you are coming or not coming for the friendly. Thanks!

Changes in Training Time/Venue

This post is to let you all know there will be some changes in the debate training venues and timings -

Monday, 1st October - We do not have E307 for training, so we are going to hold training is S block (Engineering side). The venue will be S311; Pirakash please bring the CADC club room key, 'cause apparently the club room key somehow opens the doors for the Block S tutorial rooms (that's what Edwin told me...). Training will start as usual at 6 pm.

Wednesdays - Please note that all Wednesday trainings will start at 5 pm (till further notice), not - i repeat, NOT at 4.30 pm. Training, however, will still be held in E307. So, E307 - 5 pm.

Friday, 19th October - Once again, we do not have E307 for training. The venue and timing for training on this day shall be confirmed later.

On a final note, i would like say that - People please turn up atleast twice a week a for debate training, seeing that Interpolys are coming soon. We sincerely hope that there would not be instances whereby during trainings we have more coaches than trainees, and that there would not be cases like a significant number of people coincidentally falling sick on the same day...

Joey wins Singapore Debate Open!

Congratulations to the NYP contingent who attended the NTU Pro-Am Debate Tournament, I'm sure each you had great fun and took back valuable lessons. For those who didn't have a chance to attend, don't worry there are two more great tournaments coming up for all members of CADC.

In the mean time CADC will be having it's debate camp. Here is a list of research topics you can choose to look into and discuss.

(1) Rights (and responsibilities), Privileges, and Duties
(2) The Social Contract
(3) The Principle of Harm

I suggest you explore what these things are and how they are related and interact. This should be something all debaters have a good grasp of; try coming up with examples.

NTU Pro-Am Tournament

The following people will be participating in the NTU Pro-Am Tournament on the 8th and 9th of Sept (this Saturday and Sunday). Both days will begin at 9am and end at 7pm.

Debaters: Sakib, Samuel, and Pirakash
Adjudicators: Celestina and Irwan

All other club members are welcome to come and observe.

Those competing and adjudicating MUST come this Friday (2.30pm @ E.307) for training as we will be covering the BP Style of debates (which is different from our Asian style). We will also be settling transport arrangements for everyone who is going.

All other club members are also encouraged to attend as well, because there will be other BP style tournaments coming up later in Sept and Oct (hosted by NUS and SMU).

Firstly, a huge thank you to Sha for a great job coordinating the overall effort in club crawl! Also, props to everyone who came down and helped out in any way!

Anyhow, we will be having a welcome dinner to introduce everyone to everyone else. Details are as follows:

All new members and seniors are strongly encouraged to attend this dinner. We'll be going over the activities for the year, so this is a really good time for all to find out what CADC is really about and who we are (in advance and in summary: we're a bunch of mostly harmless, mostly friendly people trying to learn the ropes of debate) and make some new friends!

Hey people,

Thanks for agreeing to help out in club crawl. Please remember to wear your nice blue CADC polo tee as you embark on the noble quest of booth manning and flyer distributing. Also, it's going to be quite warm (if they persist in doing what they did today and not turn on the aircon), not to mention noisy, so please drink alot of water too!

Do note that our welcome dinner will be on 27 April (Friday) from 7pm, in E307. HeLLo everyone!!! Today I have lots of things to write about and I hope I dont bored you all with it.

First thing first, is of course regarding my birthday celebration.
I would like to thank everyone who have somehow or another contributed on the celebration both on sat and sun whether or not you are present or absent. It is my first time getting and eating two types of cakes on 2 consecutive days from the same people. Really surprised and honoured with that. Btw, both of the cakes tasted nice. Thanks alot! Also, thanks for the present too.

Last but not least, regarding Dorothy Cheung competition.
I would like to thank whoever who have forced/persuaded me to go for it. I really learnt and enjoyed myself alot. Eventhough we only managed to win 1 out of four rounds, i am quite happy with it actually. As I didnt expect to win any of the rounds. And thank you to those who came and supported us and smile and nod at me eventhough when I myself do not understand what I am saying in my speech. It really helps though. Boost my confidence. Haha.
Also, I am glad to have found and made new friends and even sparring partners for the future during the competition. It is really a good experience and I enjoyed myself!

Hello again!

Dorothy Cheung Inter-Tertiaries will be held at NTU 10 & 11 Mar, 9am, at LT 19A in North Spine (near Lee Wee Nam Library). We will meet at Jurong East MRT beforehand; watch this space for the time. In the meantime, do consider taking part!!
Training commences 7pm 7march, we will be doing something on either prostitution, capital punishment, payment of surrogate mothers, or sales of human organs.
Lastly, we need poster designs for a few things:

CADC recruitment. The usual join CADC schtuff for new students.
Emcee/Public Speaking. Introduce our new emceeing workshops to e student body.
InterSchool Debate Competition. We need people to want to join e competition, or at least watch it. Dates and times should be included, and will be furnished at a later point.

Do help out with poster designs (by next week ideally); they will eventually be printed on A3 paper as well as made into a big big banner. Thanks and see you on Wednesday!

Dorothy Cheung Inter-Tertiaries

The annual Dorothy Cheung championships organised by the NTU debating soc will be held on 10 and 11 March 2007.

We need to get back to them by the end of this week if we're gg to take part in this.

Participation fees is $15 per team (this will prolly be paid in full by the school so no worries); lunch will be provided on both days, and we need to provide one adjut for every team that we're sending.

Is anyone interested? It'll be good exposure, and really good practice, especially for those who've never debated in tournaments before.

Hello people!

There will be no training for the next 2 weeks (week 19 and 20). Training will resume on week 21; our next session will be on 7 March, usual time and place.

In the meantime, enjoy yourselves, have a happy CNY, and have a happy time mugging for exams after that! Mwahahahaha!!! (Yes, all my papers have ended, the last one was today. I is lucky lucky girl. *gloat* =)

And while you're mugging, I'll be (*double gloat*) busy catching up on my sleep debt (if anyone noticed me being crabbier than usual during training, I attribute it to the <3hrs of sleep I had last night. Not fun. And less fun sacrificing all that sleep to spot the wrong topics. Bah!)

So yes, do mug hard, and for those who celebrate CNY, eat more, play more mahjong, and have fun doing all the CNYish things! Remember to come back for training in 2 weeks!

Well. Not quite. But it's an important post anyway because there's quite alot of admin stuff to settle. So here goes:

1. CCA Points

The system has been opened for submission, so everyone who helped out at the booth for Open House, please go submit your points for endorsement. Same goes for interschool and interpoly and all your other CADC activities. The dateline for this, by the way, is 15 Feb, so hurry go submit what you have to.

2. Reorganisation of CADC

We've been given the option to expand CADC laterally. This means that we're offered the chance to train to be proficient in other public speaking activities, namely
a) Toastmasters
b) Emceeing- both formal (self-explanatory) and informal (think Open House atrium)

We need to indicate if we do want to take this up, so that the appropriate proposals can be made in time for club crawl, and we can promote everything together. The advantage of this of course is that we can spot people from these other branches and invite them to the debating side.

Regardless of whether that goes ahead, we are probably going to have to restructure the debate branch into 2 groups (basically like what some of the other polys are doing). Essentially, the outcome will be that one group will settle all the admin work (i.e. organise inter-schools, inter-poly, friendlies, and invitationals and so on), while the other will concentrate on active debating proper. So do spread the word if you've got friends who are keen to just watch debates but don't wish to speak, and would like to help us do all the paperwork.

3. The Notice Board

Needs to be updated. I'm quite free now (my exams are over! my exams are over!! Barring one last one next week, but I'm in the holiday mood already!), so if you guys have no time to do or anything I guess I could do it first (some help would be nice though? I'm not exactly Little Miss Artistic...). I have a list of stuff that we need to put up, but I think I wont clutter this already long post further.
Note that it -Has- to be up before the new batch comes in so that people don't wonder if we're still in existence and all that.
But this needs to come after:

4. Posters

Hazel/Fara/anyone else who can draw, please help us design fliers and posters for the following:
a) Inter-school
b) Club Crawl
c) Orientation & CADC Camp

We need to get handouts and fliers and posters, basically. Just get the layout and design aspect out first; the dates need to be confirmed (only Club Crawl can be safely stated to be 18 and 19 April).

I've got tentative inter-school dates (keep late june/early july free), but I need to do a proposal first and only after official approval and venue booking can it be confirmed, so we'll KIV that.

5. AUDC

Sha and I've spoken to Janette, and basically, it's pretty much a no go for us due to safety concerns. =(

Yay we survived Open House (save for a few odds and ends to tie up)! Thanks for all the hard work, and hopefully we've all had fun over the past 3 days. (Also hopefully, some of us will win stuff in the lucky draw =)

Training this year will be held weekly on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 730pm, at E307 (unless someone else books the room first -_-).

Next training is on Wednesday, 310707, at 730pm. (Er.. It would be nice if you guys could confirm attendance or lack thereof in the nice little tagboard on our blog? Please?)

Hello people!

We're going to be stationed at the NYP Lounge (3rd floor, above FJ) during Open House. We'll be somewhere at the counter proactively welcoming people into the student development area and encouraging them to try out all the activities (those who complete everything stand to win Samsung MP3 players; yes you can go take part yourself) and generally making them feel happy and welcome and inspired to rank NYP as their first choice.

More details will be out when we get them; there will be a meeting on wednesday at 4pm at said lounge so if you're free do turn up. Sha and I will brief you again after we attend the meeting and get a feel of what's happening ourselves =)

The duty roster is out; excuse letters will be given if you need so skip class. Also, I should have smsed everyone their duty dates, so do let me know if I have inadvertently left anyone out. But for now, here's when everyone's scheduled:
